American Cardiac Surgeon Prof. Malaisrie was appointed a guest professor of DeltaHealth Hospital and joined a DeltaHealth academic symposium
2024-05-24

In the morning of May 20th 2024, American cardiac surgeon Prof. S. Chris Malaisrie joined a Cardiovascular Great Vessel Academic Salon at DeltaHealth Hospital. A cardiothoracic surgeon from Northwestern University, Chicago, Prof. Malaisrie has more than 20 years of clinical experience. He is particularly experienced in cardiovascular great vessel surgery. [1]

CEO of DeltaHealth Hospital Wood Zhang, medical president Prof. Sun Lizhong, deputy CMO Prof. Huang Lianjun, Prof Liu Jianshi, cardiac surgeons Dr. Liu Wei, Dr. Jian Kaitao and Dr. Xiayu, and other chief physicians and peer cardiac surgeons attended the symposium.

Wood Zhang, CEO of DeltaHealth Hospital, addressed the audience at the beginning of the meeting. Expressing warm welcome to Prof. Malaisrie, he remarked that the Cardiovascular Great Vessel team of DeltaHealth Hospital is led by Prof. Sun Lizhong, thus the face-to-face communication between the two parties is invaluable. He looked forward to more similar communications in the future.

Prof. Sun Lizhong presented Prof. Malaisrie with the letter of appointment as a Guest Professor.

In the academic exchange session, Prof. Malaisrie made a report on Valve-Sparing Aortic Root Replacement for Aortic Root Aneurysm (VSARR). In the lecture, he shared that Bentall's Operation is the conventional surgical procedure for aortic root aneurysm. The application of mechanical valve requires long-term anticoagulation regime, which results in increased risks of anticoagulation complications and long-term reoperation rate caused by bio-valve applications. On the other hand, VSARR mitigates these risks.

Prof. Malaisrie also shared his experience in modified David V Standard operation. Performing VSARR using branched stent grafts, he detailed the use of grafts of various sizes to connect the proximal sino-tubular junction and distal ascending aorta with artificial grafts in different sizes. An increasing body of evidence supports VSARR as a viable alternative for the treatment of aneurysm, including patients with connective tissue disease such as Marfan Syndrome. Especially for young patients with aortic root aneurysm who have normal or near to normal aortic valves, VSARR is considered a superior treatment option.

Subsequently, medical experts from the Cardiovascular Great Vessel Surgery department of DeltaHealth Hospital delivered reports with great highlights:

Dr. Liu Wei delivered a themed speech on “Treatment of Aortic Transplant Infection”;

Dr. Jian Kaitao gave a lecture on “Experiences in the treatment of Type A acute aortic dissection – The DeltaHealth Model”;

Dr. Xia Yu shared experience in “Different surgical methods for thoracic and abdominal aortic replacement”.

Prof. Malaisrie then observed an ascending aorta replacement +Sun's Procedure performed by Prof. Sun Lizhong and his team. With great excitement, he noted that it was an honor for him to witness the surgical expertise of Prof. Sun Lizhong, a leading authority in cardiovascular and great vessel surgery.
